What To Do and What Not To Do After Acupuncture (NO SEX)

After acupuncture, in the early stages of recovery, patients are generally relaxed. When I come back into the room to take out the needles, I’ve found that patients have various reactions to my treatment:

30% don’t know where they are

10% think I am their significant other and quickly tell me to go away

40% know who I am and wish I would leave them alone

10% want the playlist

10% think they have taken 5 gummies chased down with two jello shots

Some of my favorite post acupuncture stories

Rachel left the office, got in her car and drove the wrong way on a one-way street.

Jason left his wallet, his phone, his sunglasses and never once noticed it was all missing. He returned later in the day to collect everything.

Sara left without her underwear.

Jennifer walked home instead of going to work. She decided that it was a work-from-home day.

Stephanie came to my front office and asked if everyone heard her snoring.

My patients come in with their chief complaint: back pain, stomach problems, insomnia, irregular cycles. I ask all of my regular questions but then take a look at one’s tongue and pulse. That tells me truly what’s going on and what I want to work on. I'm a strong believer that emotions attack the weakest spot. Meaning, under stress or anxiety, one's emotions can wreak havoc on the physical body. The combination of treating the chief complaint and reading one's emotions helps to not only treat the symptom but to also treat the root cause.

Sometimes after acupuncture you feel out of it for a little while. Certain organs, such as the heart or liver, are specially targeted to create the smooth flow of qi throughout the body. As an acupuncturist, I think sedating these organs helps the body find a calm equilibrium. When one's qi is flowing well, the body is free of disease. One of my goals as an acupuncturist is to calm one’s spirit. We have so much stress in our lives from work, family and relationships. My treatments are geared to managing stress and taking you away from everything outside of the Sher Acupuncture Center. We all deserve some peace and quiet.

So know that the next time you come in I might have other plans for your treatment. My secret goal is to get you to a more tranquil place.

What to do after acupuncture

I always recommend people take it easy after a treatment. Don’t do a HIIT class, don’t go to the gym, don’t do wind sprints and don’t have sex. We want your qi to be flowing, and once you have an orgasm your jing (essence) and qi (energy) are depleted. This more relates to men, but I recommend that all of my patients wait. Go do restorative yoga and take a long walk. Let your body heal and find balance. Drink plenty of fluids. And take it easy!!
